3 Key Films That Inspired Queen & Slim, According To The Director

Image
3 hours ago Queen & Slim is an ambitious and powerful movie, and watching it you’d never expect that it was from a first time feature filmmaker. And yet, it is the first venture into that particular realm for Melina Matsoukas, who has had a long and successful career in directing music videos before making this particular leap. It’s an impressive venture that balances a variety of tones and genres, and would have been a challenging project for a veteran to take on, let alone someone looking to establish their particular voice on a new stage. The reason the film succeeds is because Matsoukas emerges with the feature as an exciting potential auteur – and as I recently learned during a recent interview with the filmmaker, that vision was constructed with some particular inspirations in mind. In the making of the movie she recognized all of the different elements at play in Lena Waithe’s script, and drew from particular sources. And while she didn’t give me a full list of a...

How The Mandalorian May Pave The Way For Star Wars: Episode X

Image
4 hours ago In a world where the mere mention of a Star Wars movie can start a flame war, Jon Favreau has done something special. A Star Wars series has launched to near universal acclaim and, for now, has unified a previously divided fandom. Assuming this trend continues, one has to imagine Lucasfilm will find some way for this series to shape the future of the franchise as it looks towards Episode X and beyond. It sounds like a great plan, but how could The Mandalorian , a series that predates Star Wars: The Force Awakens in this fictional timeline, possibly pave the way for the future of the franchise? The answer is small, green and already has a demand for merchandise. If the folks at Lucasfilm are paying attention, then chances are someone is figuring out how Baby Yoda will play into the franchise's future. What The Mandalorian Would Do To Establish Baby Yoda In Its Future Right now, we can only speculate that Baby Yoda has a role in Star Wars ...

Godzilla Vs. Kong Has Been Delayed

Image
5 hours ago For those of you who were looking forward to Godzilla and King Kong finally clashing in the MonsterVerse next spring, you’ll have to cool your heels. Word has come in that Godzilla vs. Kong , the fourth entry in this creature-filled franchise, has been delayed to next November. Godzilla vs. Kong had previously been scheduled as a May 2020 release, first taking the May 29 slot and then being moved to May 22. Then the highly-anticipated crossover was shifted to March 13, 2020, meaning it would drop less than a year after Godzilla: King of the Monsters . Now Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Godzilla vs. Kong has been moved to November 20, 2020. Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich acknowledged back in June that Godzilla vs. Kong being pushed back was a possibility in order to ensure it came out “an A+ movie.” Sure enough, that’s what happened, and now Godzilla vs. Kong finds itself as the biggest release th...

Avengers: Endgame Originally Gave Thanos Another Epic Battle

Image
6 hours ago If there’s one thing that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame cannot be accused of, it’s not having enough huge, action-packed battles. The final battle in Endgame in particular, where the Avengers assemble against Thanos’ forces, is a dream come true for comic book fans. While that battle was more than enough to sate even the most ardent fan of watching people in tights fighting alien invaders, it turns out that Avengers: Endgame originally gave Thanos another epic battle. This additional battle was revealed thanks to the recently released art book Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie (via Comicbook.com). The book offers some visual insight into this epic battle that never made it to the screen, where Thanos and his forces would have faced off not with the Avengers, but with another group on an alien world. It seems that the residents of this alien world would have had access to advanced military technology, and the images in the ...

The Rise Of Skywalker Won’t Be The Longest Star Wars Movie After All

Image
7 hours ago Back in mid-October, it was rumored that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would clock in at 155 minutes long, i.e. two hours and 35 minutes. If true, that would make Episode IX the longest Star Wars movie yet, and this runtime was later posted on the AMC Theatres website. However, The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has debunked said runtime and revealed that the movie will be almost 15 minutes shorter than previously indicated. According to J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be two hours and 21 minutes-long, adding an “I believe” after spouting off that information to Entertainment Weekly, thus allowing a minute or two of wiggle room. Now that we have an official runtime, The Rise of Skywalker can take its place as the third-longest Star Wars movie. The Last Jedi ranks at #1 with 152 minutes, and Attack of the Clones edges out at #2 with 142 minutes, just one minute longer than Episode IX . Considering that Star Wars: The Ris...

After Gambit Delays, Channing Tatum Has Finally Found His Comic Book Adaptation

Image
17 minutes ago For several years, actor Channing Tatum has been attached to play the popular mutant Gambit in a solo X-Men spinoff. But after an extended stay in development hell, followed by Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox, Gambit has been shelved, effectively putting an end to the prospect of seeing Channing Tatum throwing energized playing cards on the big screen. That film was dealt a bad hand, but now after Gambit ’s delays, Channing Tatum has finally found a different comic book adaptation to work on. Channing Tatum and producer Roy Lee are teaming up to bring the cult comic The Maxx to the screen, according to THR. The actor is set to produce the project via his Free Association production company alongside Reid Karolin and Peter Kiernan. They will team with Roy Lee, who will produce The Maxx through his Vertigo Entertainment label, which just this year produced IT Chapter Two and Doctor Sleep . Unlike Gambit , in which Channing Tatum was set to star, a...

After years of waiting, Frozen II has finally hit theaters. The Disney animated blockbuster is currently breaking records at the box office, as fans clamored to screenings in order to catch up with Elsa, Anna, and the rest of Arendelle. This includes Josh Gad's Olaf, who was a scene stealer in the original movie, as well as the shorts that followed Frozen 's release. But now Gad is getting very emotional about the possibility of saying goodbye to the talking snowman that captured our hearts. Josh Gad became a household name for playing Olaf in Frozen , and his appearance in the sequel gave Tony Award nominee the chance to sing a new song, and move his signature character forward. It's currently unclear if the franchise will get a threequel, especially after Frozen II wrapped up its story in such a nea...
